kickstarter project wants to enable ANYONE to release their own GMO frankencrops

anyone with enough money for a PC has the fundamental right to forever alter the genetic makeup of life on earth, according to a bunch of assholes in california.

Singularity University in California had mounted a project on the popular crowdfunding site Kickstarter. It was a plan to carry out the worlds first environmental release of an avowedly Synthetic Biology organism – a glow-in-the dark arabidopsis plant. Shockingly the ‘Glowing Plants’ kickstarter project promised to mail up to 100 bioengineered seeds to anyone from the United States who gave them $40 online . To date over 4000 people expect to receive syn bio seeds in the post. The seeds, which they said would likely grow into ‘glowing plants’ (after all, ‘biology is complicated,’ admit the masterminds) would be the viable and reproducing products of ‘Synthetic Biology’ – A field that has never had a deliberate release into the environment before. Even more shockingly they claim that the US Government had agreed not to regulate, assess or monitor this widespread random and nation-wide release of synthetic organisms.

In the last few years Synthetic Biology has been gaining increasing visibility in press and policy circles. Ther have been a parade of pronouncements from expert groups, – including from the President’s bioethics commission, diplomats of the UN biodiversity convention, an EU expert group, the insurance industry etc. To date all have agreed that no synthetic organisms should yet be released into the environment without ‘precaution,’ ‘prudent vigilance,’ regulation, monitoring and other sober and sensible safeguards. Yet now the US government appears ready to avert its eyes . Kickstarter turns out to be the only entity to subject the world first Syn Bio pollution project to any kind of review; sort of. While Kickstarter’s own ethical guidelines exclude the posting of projects involving ‘sunglasses’ or ‘bath products,’ promoting the world’s first uncontrolled, unmonitored and unregulated release of synthetic organisms apparently didn’t raise any red flags at Kickstarter HQ. ETC Group and Friends of the Earth have written to Kickstarter to request they cancel the project (see letter here). We have also written to the US Department of Agriculture (see letter here) and to the ‘Glowing Plants’ Kickstarter project creators (see letter here).

Kicking back…

What’s the solution for a world that crazy? A little Kickstarter jujitsu (kick butt?)? If the biohackers can have a Kickstarter campaign to release their glowtesque synthetic biology plants, then maybe a few sensible folks could mount their own Kickstarter initiative to stuff the genetically engineered genie back in the bottle – or at least ensure it never makes it out of the glowing plant lab. Enter the counter-Kickstarter campaign – the Kickstopper.

ETC Group is now working to set up our own Kickstopper campaign. We will be applying to Kickstarter to mount a publishing project whose aim is to prevent those Synthetic Biology seeds from being mailed around the US.

The biggest risk is that we do nothing and let the synthetic biologists move ahead with releasing hundreds of thousands of synbio seeds, setting an eerily glowing precedent that many other commercial biotech firms and informal biohackers alike will follow – using kickstarter and other crowdfunding sites to do an end-run around oversight of risky technologies.

We are going to be calling on friends and allies and all who are opposed to widepread release of synthetic organisms to help us kick back and put a stop to this syn bio pollution project. If you are interested to help the kickstopper initiative, to back it on kickstarter once it goes live and to spread the word of this important campaign please leave us your name and email below (at teh foot of this page) and we will keep you informed as the kicsktopper rolls ahead.

h3>Why Do We March? From the March Against Monsanto website:

Research studies have shown that Monsanto’s genetically-modified foods can lead to serious health conditions such as the development of cancer tumors, infertility and birth defects.
In the United States, the FDA, the agency tasked with ensuring food safety for the population, is steered by ex-Monsanto executives, and we feel that’s a questionable conflict of interests and explains the lack of government-led research on the long-term effects of GM products.
Recently, the U.S. Congress and president collectively passed the nicknamed “Monsanto Protection Act” that, among other things, bans courts from halting the sale of Monsanto’s genetically-modified seeds.
For too long, Monsanto has been the benefactor of corporate subsidies and political favoritism. Organic and small farmers suffer losses while Monsanto continues to forge its monopoly over the world’s food supply, including exclusive patenting rights over seeds and genetic makeup.
Monsanto’s GM seeds are harmful to the environment; for example, scientists have indicated they have contributed to Colony Collapse Disorder among the world’s bee population.

What are solutions we advocate?

Voting with your dollar by buying organic and boycotting Monsanto-owned companies that use GMOs in their products.
Labeling of GMOs so that consumers can make those informed decisions easier.
Repealing relevant provisions of the US’s “Monsanto Protection Act.”
Calling for further scientific research on the health effects of GMOs.
Holding Monsanto executives and Monsanto-supporting politicians accountable through direct communication, grassroots journalism, social media, etc.
Continuing to inform the public about Monsanto’s secrets.
Taking to the streets to show the world and Monsanto that we won’t take these injustices quietly.

We will not stand for cronyism. We will not stand for poison. That’s why we March Against Monsanto.

GMO Food Fight: the Rematch

On November 6, in the wake of one of the most expensive and scurrilous smear campaigns in history, six million voters scared the hell out of Monsanto and Big Food Inc. by coming within a razor’s edge of passing the first statewide mandatory labeling law for genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Prop 37, a citizens’ ballot initiative that would have required the mandatory labeling of billions of dollars of genetically engineered (GE) foods and put an end to the routine industry practice of fraudulently marketing GE-tainted foods as “natural” or “all natural”, lost by a narrow margin of 48.6% to 51.4%. Opponents couldn’t claim anything close to a landslide, even though they outspent the pro-labeling campaign almost six to one.

Bitter Seeds explores the future of how we grow things, weighing in on the worldwide debate over the changes created by industrial agriculture. Companies like the U.S.-based Monsanto claim that their genetically modified (GM) seeds offer the most effective solution to feeding the world’s growing population, but on the ground, many small-scale farmers are losing their land. Nowhere is the situation more desperate than in India, where an epidemic of farmer suicides has claimed over a quarter million lives. Every 30 minutes one farmer in India, deep in debt and unable to provide for his family, commits suicide.

Monsanto Protection Act May Soon Be Repealed Thanks to Activism

The so-called Monsanto Protection Act signed into law earlier this year caused such an outrage that people around the world are planning to protest the biotech company later this month. Now a United States Senator is expected to try and repeal that law after mounting pressure.

The notorious ‘Monsanto Protection Act’ rider stuffed into the non-related Senate spending bill may soon be repealed thanks to the massive amounts of activism and outrage that have now amounted into a legislative charge towards action. Action that has turned into legislation progress through Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon, who has announced an amendment that would remove Section 735 (the Monsanto Protection Act as its known) from the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2013 Senate spending bill.

The rider, which almost managed to slip incognito and pass by the alarm system of the alternative media, grants GMO juggernaut Monsanto full immunity from federal courts in the event that one of its genetically modified creations is found to be causing damage to health or the environment. Essentially, it grants Monsanto power over the United States federal government. Thankfully, I was able to get on the subject through news tips and covered the Monsanto Protection Act all the way up until the bill containing it was signed into law by Obama.

Thanks to this activism, it looks like the Monsanto Protection Act may soon be repealed after this new bill hits Washington. This time, we will have plenty of time to let the Senators know that they are voting against the public if they choose to side with Monsanto. And with such a specific agenda for this bill, I see it doing well in the Senate.

spaniards swarm banks, 100′s shut down!

the translation below is a bit dodgy, but you get the idea…see the original article en espanol, from kaos en la red, [Estuvimos allí] (VIDEOS) Bankia tocada!! Las acciones de #toqueabankia paralizan decenas de sucursales en todo el estado español

May 9th. A day of action against the nationalized bankrupt BANKIA in Spain went VIRAL with hundreds of branches closed, occupied, attacked, etc.

Thousands of staff are now being fired.

Swindled customers of all ages  appeared to demand their savings back

[We were there]Bankia hit! Shares of # toqueabankia paralyzed, dozens of branches hit throughout the Spanish state
by Kaos. The abuses of the banking mafia.. Thurs, May 9.

Video here, and more photos, too!

We were there to provide cover for the actions proposed by social groups. Dozens of branches closed “breakdowns” “by technical problems” throughout the country. The actions ranged from being “cansinxs clients”, people dressed up, parties, songs …

All this served to HIT Bankia. The relevance of these actions has been so overwhelming that the capitalist media have had to

bankJam

spend (little or not so little) room to inform about them. From the early morning hours  different groups or individuals who would participate in the # toqueabankia branches approached their offices.

Many found that these were already closed due to “breakdowns” “for technical or operational problems” as an excuse for them if they occur. This led to greater focus on those branches that remained open.

There were also police officers, security guards and even customers trapped inside Bankia branches. (See videos)

Some pickets allowed free entry, other semi restricted, others were directly prevented. The consultations varied, imagination multiplied.

Extensive fake consultations began, closing accounts, urgent needs to know of their advantageous pension plans or their wonderful parts housing loans. But yeah, not to mention the new offer of Bankia ..no commission but one of the conditions is that the person buys 1000 shares of Bankia (really!!)

Overall, its been a wonderful day, because many branches that had not yet closed, by about 12 hours had begun to do.

Very good coverage of Tomalatele (suysulucha) see video at the bottom.

Very good the comrades actions of Salamanca (derailing hose from there do not move!)

Many goals met, again we won: it has been completely successful action in which we have seen the glut of people but above all our ability and creativity organzación to disturb the system.

We must take to the streets, because it is the only way to stop them and regain hope.

Son-in-law: Former CIA agent Graham Fuller, left, explained his relationship to the two Boston terror suspects' uncle today. Ruslan Tsarni, right, was married for three years to his daughter, Samantha. photo: daily mail

is russia being forced to take action against out-of-control cia and their al qaeda allies?

Russia Is Cracking Down on Its Own Militants in the Wake of Boston

Early this morning, Russian forces killed two suspected terrorists in the region of Dagestan, in what looks to be part of a post-Boston crackdown on their own homegrown militants. At least five other rebels have been killed in the last week and more than a hundred others rounded up around the country for having suspected ties to Islamic militant groups.

One of the two men killed this morning even had a “tangential” connection to Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the two suspects in the Boston attack. Russian authorities raided the home of Shakhrudin Askhabov, killing him and one other person after they reportedly opened fire on the police. The Federal Security Service (FSB) even released video of the raid, including images of the dead bodies and some of their weapons.

Moscow has been battling Islamic militants, nationalist rebels, and organized crime in Dagestan off and on ever since the Soviet Union broke up. It’s been a long and brutal conflict that Russia has often tried to tie to the larger global fight against Islamic terrorism. Despite facing a number of terrorist attacks on their own soil, Russia’s questionable tactics and heavy-handed retaliations have not earned them a lot of sympathy from the global community

But during public comments on the Boston bombings last week, President Vladimir Putin made it clear that he hopes Americans might start to see things his way, now that source of both countries’ terror problems have had the same root. At the very least, it seems it have may temporarily given him cover for a crackdown that Moscow wanted to carried out anyway. - from the atlantic wire

Testimony on Russian-American Relations on the Question of Chechnya
Before the U.S. Congress
Russian actions in Chechnya were primarily criticized in the Western media, and in Western political circles, as they were seen through the prism of human rights violations and the excessive use of force. There was a potent attempt to separate the American fight against Islamist terrorism from the Russian fight against Chechen terrorism that took place within Russia’s borders.
"no one's talking pre-emptive strike...for now..."

“no one’s talking pre-emptive strike…for now…”

In addition, Russian efforts to get extradition orders for some Chechen terrorist leaders that moved to the UK, such as Akhmed Zakayev, self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria (Chechen separatists call Chechnya “Ichkeria”), or to the U.S., such as Ilyas Akhmadov, Foreign Minister of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, who, by the way, was granted asylum in Boston, received neither understanding nor support by the American and British sides. As if that were not enough, sadly, many Western countries preferred to call the terrorists and cut-throats “freedom fighters” oppressed by the Russian authorities.

This last point was articulated by President Putin in his annual direct line with the public on April 25th. He was translated by the Russian media as having said, “I was always appalled when our Western partners and the Western media called the terrorists, who did bloody crimes in our country, ‘insurgents’, and almost never ‘terrorists.’ They [the terrorists] were receiving help, informational, financial and political support. Sometimes directly and sometimes indirectly. And we were saying that we must do the job and not be content with declarations proclaiming terrorism a common threat. Those two have proved our position all too well”
The attacks by the Tsarnaev brothers in Boston, as well as the 9/11 attacks, have provoked feelings of solidarity with the American people and especially with the citizens of Boston among the Russian people and Kremlin leadership. Just as he did in 2001, President Putin expressed his readiness to cooperate with the U.S. government to uncover all the details that led to the tragedy in Boston and, as far as I know, the secret services of both countries are now actively working together on this.
It is crucial to point out that the Russian side and Russian secret services tracked the contacts of the Tsarnaevs and turned to the American authorities so that they could investigate them. Unfortunately, the evident remaining distrust between the two countries and the doubts of the American side that Russia is indeed combating Chechen terrorism in the Caucasus must have caused the authorities to not take the warning seriously enough. – from the Institute for Democracy and Cooperation

Boston terror suspects uncle was married to CIA officer’s daughter and even shared a home with the agent

An uncle of the Boston bombers was previously married to a CIA officer’s daughter for three years, it emerged today.

Ruslan Tsarni even lived with his father-in-law agent Graham Fuller in his Maryland home for a year.

Mr Fuller was forced to explain the relationship today as news of the family link emerged online.

He told Al-Monitor that his daughter, Samantha, was married to Ruslan, whose surname was then Tsarnaev, for three to four years in the 1990s.

this graph shows "drills" planned in the dalls/ft. worth area for later this year. the first one was the day of the explosion in west, texas.

this graph shows “drills” planned in the dallas/ft. worth area for later this year.

The couple divorced in 1999 more than ten years after he left the agency in 1987.

‘Samantha was married to Ruslan Tsarnaev (Tsarni) for 3-4 years, and they lived in Bishkek for one year where Samantha was working for Price Waterhouse on privatization projects,’ Mr Fuller said.

‘I, of course, retired from CIA in 1987 and had moved on to working as a senior political scientist for RAND.’

He said his son-in-law showed no interest in the agency or politics but spoke generally about his family in Chechnya.

He said any attempts to portray the relationship as a link between the security agency and the two terrorists was ‘absurd’.

‘Like all Chechens, Ruslan was very concerned about his native land, but I saw no particular involvement in politics,’ Fuller told Al-Monitor.

‘I doubt he even had much to say of intelligence value other than talking about his own family’s sad tale of deportation from Chechnya by Stalin to Central Asia. Every Chechen family has such stories.’ - from the daily mail.

Putin Suggests West Uses Al Qaeda to Bring Down Assad

Russian president Vladimir Putin in an interview that aired on Thursday suggested that Western powers are using terrorists to destabilize the Ba’athist regime in Syria. “This is a dangerous and very short sighted policy,” he said.

The Russian leader, who started his third term as president in May, told Russia’s RT television, “Today, some want to use militants from Al Qaeda or some other organizations with equally radical views to achieve their goals in Syria.” He compared the situation to the United States backing mujahideen rebels during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s and warned that propping up Islamic extremists in Syria will similarly backfire. – from the atlantic sentinel

The EU Al-Qaeda Oil Consortium

syriamap

The decision of the European Union to lift the embargo on Syrian government’s energy exports by importing oil from the ‘armed opposition’ is another flagrant violation of international law. It violates the UN General Assembly declaration of 1962 on Permanent Sovereignty over Natural Resources and is yet another violation of the 1981 UN declaration on the Inadmissibility of Intervention and Interference in the Internal Affairs of States. But it is much more than a technical violation of the law. It marks the decent of civilization into barbarism.

London and Paris, have more than Washington, been at the forefront of aggression against Syria. In spite of the fact that it has now been confirmed by most media sources that the Syrian ‘opposition’ is Al-Qaeda, London and Paris persist  in their insane drive to arm the terrorists, using the spurious argument that if they don’t arm the ‘moderates’ the ‘extremists’ will take over the country. However, in the words of the New York Times, ‘nowhere in rebel-controlled Syria is there a secular fighting force to speak of’. The fact that the Syrian ‘rebels’ are in fact Al- Qaeda has even  been admitted by the war-mongering French daily  Le Monde.

So, Paris and London are pushing for further arming of Al-Qaeda and the legalization of oil trading with the jihadi terrorists. In plain language this means that the loose, terrorist network known to the world as Al-Qaeda will soon become one of the EU’s partners in the oil business. A new absurd chapter in the Era of Terror is about to be enacted. - from global research, Stealing Syria’s Oil: The EU Al-Qaeda Oil Consortium

FOR AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT THIS, SEE ACTIVIST POST:

EU Lifts Oil Embargo on Syria – Buys Directly from Al Qaeda

Western media hails EU oil deal as potential game changer, despite admitting Al Qaeda holds oil fields.

It was recently reported that the European Union would be lifting its oil embargo on Syria, in an effort to help fund what it calls “rebels” operating there. In the Associated Press article, “EU lifts Syria oil embargo to bolster rebels,” it states:

The European Union on Monday lifted its oil embargo on Syria to provide more economic support to the forces fighting to oust President Bashar Assad’s regime.

The decision will allow for crude exports from rebel-held territory, the import of oil and gas production technology, and investments in the Syrian oil industry, the EU said in a statement.

A recent TIME article titled, “Syria’s Opposition Hopes to Win the War by Selling Oil,” reports:

On paper, the E.U.’s idea seemed straightforward. Without an embargo, European companies can now legally begin importing barrels of oil directly from rebel groups, which have seized several oil fields in recent months, mostly around the eastern area of Deir Ezzor. That would provide the opposition with its first reliable source of income since the revolt erupted in Feb. 2011, and in theory hasten the downfall of Bashar Assad’s regime, by giving rebels the means to run skeletal local governments and consolidate their control. As part of the decision, the E.U. ministers also agreed to export technical equipment, insure the rebels’ shipments of oil and invest in the rebel oil businesses. Before the war, Syria earned about $3.6 billion a year exporting oil and gas to Europe, with its biggest customers in Germany and Italy, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The BBC in their article, “EU eases Syria oil embargo to help opposition,” would mention which fields specifically the EU was planning on exploiting, stating:

Syria’s main oilfields are in the eastern provinces of Deir al-Zour and Hassakeh, which both border Iraq.

Just as in Libya, the West is wasting no time in despoiling Syria’s resources, with the pillaging beginning long before the war even reaches a definitive conclusion. But in addition to the overt looting of Syria’s resources, there is an added complication.TIME also reports:

Still, analysts warn that the plan is deeply flawed—and in fact, that the E.U.’s decision could intensify the violence in Syria, by setting up a deadly competition for control of a resource that has languished amid two years of grinding civil war.

And indeed, this “deadly competition” has already been taking place, as Al Qaeda’s al-Nusra front in Syria has been overrunning civilian populations, government positions, and local militias alike across Syria’s oil-rich region. In fact, TIME’s itself admits that:

Complicating the issue is the fact that several of the rebel-held oil fields are believed to be under the control of Jabhat al-Nusra, which has declared its allegiance to al-Qaeda.

TIME concedes that “several” oil fields are held by Al Qaeda; however, other reports across the Western media indicate most, if not all “rebel-held oil fields” are under Al Qaeda’s control.
In the  New York Times article, “Islamist Rebels Create Dilemma on Syria Policy,” not only is it admitted that, “nowhere in rebel-controlled Syria is there a secular fighting force to speak of,” but it specifically mentions the oil fields the EU seeks to plunder:

Elsewhere, they [al-Nusra] have seized government oil fields, put employees back to work and now profit from the crude they produce.

Additionally:

In the oil-rich provinces of Deir al-Zour and Hasaka, Nusra fighters have seized government oil fields, putting some under the control of tribal militias and running others themselves.

In Reuters’ “Rebels battle with tribesmen over oil in Syria’s east,” it is admitted that:

Islamist rebels are clashing with tribesmen in eastern Syria as struggles over the region’s oil facilities break out in the power vacuum left by civil war, activists said on Saturday.

One dispute over a stolen oil truck in the town of Masrib in the province of Deir al-Zor, which borders Iraq, set off a battle between tribesmen and fighters from the Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda linked rebel group, which left 37 killed, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The fighting, which started in late March and lasted 10 days, was part of a new pattern of conflict between tribal groups and the Nusra Front, said a report from the Observatory, a British-based group which opposes Syria’s government and draws information from a network of activists in the country.

The Reuters article had forewarned:

The incentive for disputes over lucrative resources may be increased by plans by the European Union to lift an embargo on Syrian oil, which would make it easier to sell.

The EU said this week it wants to allow Syria’s opposition to sell crude in an effort to tilt the balance of power towards the rebels, who are outgunned by Assad’s fighter planes and long range missiles.

In other words, the EU’s announcement while lining the pockets of big-oil, is sowing increased chaos, violence, and death across oil-rich regions of Syria, compounding an already catastrophic humanitarian disaster of the West’s own creation. It is also clear that Al Qaeda’s al-Nusra front is the opposition the EU plans to buy the oil from, as there are no other “opposition” groups across the country to speak of according even to the New York Times, and more specifically, none besides al-Nusra holding significant ground in Syria’s oil fields.

happy mayday! anarchists continue to stand strong in defiance of government persecution

anarchists imprisoned for thoughtcrimes released by u.s. government

this is from a different report; (note that this report never mentions the fact that neither one was in seattle the day of the incident, seeing as how they lived in olympia)

Katie Olejnik, 23, and Matt Duran, 24, talked to KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter James Schugel for the first time since getting out of Seatac Federal Detention Center.

Anarchists vandalized downtown Seattle businesses and a courthouse last May. They used sticks and bats to damage several buildings and a courthouse and to vandalize vehicles.

When Olejnik and Duran wouldn’t share information about the riots, the government sent them to prison. They stayed there for more than three months.

“They were like, ‘Do you know this person?’” Oljenik said, “and they would say a name, and I wasn’t going to answer. Then they started asking me about people’s political beliefs, and I couldn’t answer that in good conscience.”

“I believe in a lot of different ways of organizing, and that may be one thing somebody does,” Duran said. “But I can’t control what they do.”

A judge released the two from prison two weeks ago, on the grounds that confinement made them more resolute and was pointless.

Schugel asked Olejnik and Duran if the rioters did the right thing.

“I can’t control anyone else’s actions,” Olejnik said. “This is going to sound really horrible, but I don’t really care what happened on May Day. I don’t have a strong opinion either way.” – from kiroTV, Anarchists who refused to testify speak out for first time

FBI Harassment of Anarchists in Pacific Northwest Continues

They’ve visited a number of houses and The Evergreen State College looking for various people. Sometimes they’ve named names; other times they’ve just made their presence known and gone away. We have no firm indication that they are attempting to serve subpoenas.

What should we do on a day like today?

Foremost, do not panic. Take deep breaths, go for a walk (it is a beautiful sunny day in Washington), do whatever you need to do to stay focused and calm.

If your house is visited, do not open the door. Ask the feds who they are looking for, and tell them that you have nothing to say to them. Let people know that you have been visited. If they say someone’s name, make sure you notify that person.

Make a plan. What would you do if you were subpoenaed? Would you resist by appearing and refusing to testify? Are you prepared to go to prison?

If you are not prepared to go to prison, BE HONEST ABOUT IT.

A lesson to be learned from a prior debacle is this: those who feel unable to endure a possibly lengthy stay in prison, including segregation or solitary confinement, should find other options.

If you feel weak, then do what you must to feel strong. Forget any pressure to appear in any venue: you owe nothing to the media, you owe nothing to “the cause.” What you do, you should do for yourself and those you love. Reach into yourself, find a rock on which you can plant yourself. Get help from those close to you. Find your strength. As important as strength, is flexibility. Find that, as well. Bend when you need to, so that you do not break. – from sayNothing.info

Brooklyn Anarchist Refusing to Play Along With the System

Brooklyn’s 24-year-old Gerald Koch is not charged in the 2008 bombing of a Times Square military recruitment center, which injured no one, but he’s still at the center of the case. Prosecutors believe Koch may have heard something about who did it in a bar back in 2008 or 2009, and have subpoenaed him to testify in front of a grand jury for the second time. He claims to have “no recollection of any such incident,” and so, like last time, he’s refusing to testify, calling the situation “a ‘fishing expedition’ to gain information concerning my personal beliefs and political associations.” – from new york magazine

and what’s the deal with anarchists and mayday?

On May 1, 1886 tens of thousands of workers across the country went on a three day general strike in support of the 8 hour work day. On May 3rd workers in Chicago attempted to confront strikebreakers that were entering a plant where workers had been locked out since February and supported the call for a eight hour work day. The strikebreakers had the protection of hundreds of police and when the striking workers surged forward to meet them at the gates of the factory the police opened fire killing 2-6 workers. The next day May 4th, in response, anarchists called for a rally at Haymarket Square in Chicago. When police ordered the rally to disperse and marched forward in formation a bomb was thrown toward the police: a riot ensued; untold numbers of workers were killed and injured by police bullets. The bomb as well as gunshots from mostly friendly fire killed eight cops. Eight anarchists were later imprisoned in retribution and known as the Haymarket martyrs. Each was tried for murder, the incident and trial led to indignation around the world as the prosecution conceded that none of the eight threw the bomb. The eight were not on trial for throwing bombs, but for being radical labor agitators and anarchists. Two had their sentences commuted to life in prison, one received fifteen years, four were eventually executed, and one cheated the hangman by taking his own life in prison. The anarchist idea did not die in Chicago in 1887. Today it still inspires the struggle against global capitalism and the state. – from puget sound anarchists, Mayday: History, Hype, and Dignified Revolt

“…the Chicago Idea, opposed all top-down control of the economy and the workplace, believing working men and women had the necessary skills to run productive businesses without resorting to exploitation. Both Parsons and Spies believed that the rise of industrial capitalism produced “wage slaves,” who weren’t much different from African-American slaves, working long, exhausting hours for starvation pay with no method of redress. According to these anti-authoritarians, free people don’t rent themselves to a boss who controls them for much of the day; rather, they work voluntarily and cooperatively to benefit themselves and their co-workers.

Yet, both men also opposed state socialism, or the belief that a central, controlling authority was necessary to produce a more just society. They were left libertarians who believed, much like many Americans today, that the government that governs least, governs best. Instead, they fought for an idea expressed by the Lowell Mill Girls in the 1840′s: “Those who work in the mills ought to own them. - from anarchy and chaos, Haymarket and the Chicago Idea Resonate 125 Years Later

FBI, local police conducting massive sweep in Oakland

A massive law enforcement sweep was underway in Oakland Wednesday, with nine people having reportedly been detained an hour after it was first reported.

FBI agents, local police SWAT and the California Highway Patrol were targeting multiple locations.

oaklandCopsSeveral streets were closed down in West Oakland during the sweeps. Portions of Seventh and Eighth streets were shut down in the area for at least 90 minutes and while helicopters circled overhead.

The police barricades were reportedly lifted just before 10:20 p.m.

It appeared to be an extensive operation with many officers involved.

There were agents carrying out actions in numerous parts of the city Wednesday night.

As of 9 p.m., KTVU learned that nine people had been detained.

An hour later, a separate sweep involving San Leandro Police reportedly resulted in a standoff near the intersection of E. 22 Street and 14th Avenue.

Oakland Police and other agencies involved told KTVU that the participating departments were not at liberty to discuss what the action concerned.

However, those agencies would be able to release details when the sweep was over.

WikiLeaks wins case against Visa

Iceland’s Supreme Court has ruled that Valitor (formerly Visa Iceland) must pay WikiLeaks $204,900 per month or $2,494,604 per year in fines if it continues to blockade the whistle-blowing site.

The court upheld the decision that Valitor had unlawfully terminated its contract with WikiLeaks’ donation processor, DataCell. The Icelandic Supreme Court is the highest court in Iceland. There is no route of appeal for Valitor.

Visa and MasterCard were among half a dozen major U.S. financial firms to pull the plug on WikiLeaks following its decision to begin publishing about 250,000 U.S. State Department cables in late 2010.

WikiLeaks has claimed that the financial blockade led to a 95 percent fall in revenue.

It said Wednesday that Iceland’s Supreme Court had upheld a district court’s decision that MasterCard’s local partner, Valitor, had illegally terminated its contract with WikiLeaks’ payment processer, DataCell.

The court warned Valitor it would be fined 800,000 Icelandic krona ($6,824) per day if the gateway to WikiLeaks donations is not reopened within 15 days, WikiLeaks said. It added that the court’s decision will bolster similar legal actions it is taking elsewhere, such as in Denmark against a Danish subcontractor for Visa.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange — who remains holed up in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, where he is seeking asylum — called the decision a victory for free speech.

ex-PM Thatcher invades hell, British people celebrate! Ding Dong the Wicked Witch is DEAD!

Number 1: The Judy Garland version of the Wizard of Oz song hit the top spot in just three days following an online campaign

Radio 1 may not play Ding Dong The Witch is Dead if it makes the Top 40 in Sunday’s Official Chart Show countdown.

The song – currently at number 10 in the midweek charts following a Facebook campaign by Thatcher critics – is on course for the coveted number one spot.

It rocketed into the charts after Baroness Thatcher died from a stroke on Monday morning.

However, Radio 1 listeners may not get to hear the song as bosses have yet to decide whether or not to play it on air.

Senior production staff will meet on Sunday morning before the chart show to discuss its content and make a decision on whether or not to play the song.

When asked if the station would play the track, a BBC spokesperson said: “The Official Chart Show on Sunday is a historical and factual account of what the British public has been buying and we will make a decision about playing it when the final chart positions are clear.”

It’s understood that if the decision is taken not to play the song it would have nothing to do with worries over offending people and instead would be due to “production reasons”.

The song, which features in the 1939 musical The Wizard of Oz and is sung by Dorothy, played by Judy Garland, has sold more than 10,600 copies.

It is roughly 5,000 copies away from a Top 3 spot.

It currently sits at number two in the iTunes download chart and is already number one on Amazon.

If the song was to make number one in the Official Chart Show it’s understood that it may not even make Radio 1′s playlist.

They have organized a network of health care, education and access to housing, based on trust among  members.
They are expanding to the rest of the peninsula. in France and Italy similar experiences have been initiated.
They have a currency of its own, a self-managed health care system, an educational network and housing office. They are self-managed cooperatives and self-organization, groups of people living outside the system,  and make decisions in open assemblies based on trust organization. In Catalonia, there are already 1,200 citizens who have chosen this way of life and the implementation of these communities is spreading. The crisis and the 15M indignados movement has given it wings.

In Sardenya street of Barcelona, near the Sagrada Familia, was established the Cooperative Integral Catalana (CIC). In a building of three floors and a roof with a brand new urban garden, they coordinate and carries out activities like education, health and housing, workshops and courses for all ages.

Opening of the first ‘CAPS’

Just opened the first CAPS, which  is not a clinic, but a Self-Managed Primary Health Center. There you can find “health facilitators’ persons accompanying patients to seek solutions to medical problems following the Holomedicina.  “If we break a leg go to the emergency room,” explains Xavier Borràs, one of the first members of the Cooperative.

In one of the spacious and modern rooms of the building,  is a day care place for children aged zero to three years. Parents of the district have organized to care for and educate their children. In addition to the 30 euros it costs to register jn the Cooperative (refundable if you leave) you will not have to pay more money. you can pay for goods or services by working hours or in ecos, their own currency.

This is a “free money” that is not prined in physical form and serves tforany trade you want to do within the network or even third parties who provide services, such as an ophthalmologist or farmers. The CIC uses the Community Exchange System (CES), an online software to manage the currency.

The eco is “free money” that has adopted by Cooperatives, Eco-Networks, Cores and Projects of Local Self Management and Initiatives of   Collectivised Autonomous. You can buy 100% organic products, or pay the dentist, part of social rent or day care of the children. Each eho is equivalent to a free market euro approximately. The term “basic” means that they have to be ‘spent’ in that month, not accumulated as capital..

With this he can cover food and voluntary contribution to the joint public health system .

They also have a housing office, which advises those who are in danger of eviction. They are informed of the gaps in the system and how they can benefit from them. It is encouraging social renting and “house caretaking”, a formula which is to recover the Catalan figure “masover”, a person or family who lives and operates a  country house owned by another.

“All this is not going against the system, but leaving the system,” explains Borràs. After years of protesting NO NO, “now is the time for YES’, and continues to clarify this history of the CIC, which was born with a hundred members and has increased already 12 fold. integral Revvo

Complementary (Local) Currency Software

cooperativesThere has been a resurgence of interest in complementary currencies. With the Eurozone’s austerity shutting down national economies in Greece, Italy, and Spain, local currencies are emerging as a tool fot communities to keep going and sustain themselves during periods of extreme economic deprivation. There has been coverage, for example, of an alternative currency scheme in Volos, Greece. The corporate media represents the currency as a “barter” system which it is not. It is a community credit system of a form popular in many places around the world. Setting up an alternate currency can be a very time-consuming and complicated process. The book-keeping is tedious and the volunteers with the passion to set up such a system rarely have either the expertise or the discipline to do it “right.” The Dutch non-profit STRO has built an Open Source Software package called CYCLOS to change all that.

Officers Who Shot 16-Year-Old Kimani Gray Had Faced Civil Rights Lawsuits

Two police officers who killed a 16-year-old boy on a New York City street have been sued for alleged civil rights violations related to other encounters with the public, the Daily News reported Saturday.

The city has paid $215,000 to settle three lawsuits against Sgt. Mourad Mourad and two against officer Jovaniel Cordova, the newspaper reported (http://nydn.us/XHjdZx).

The officers were in Brooklyn’s East Flatbush section March 9 when they tried to stop and question 16-year-old Kimani Gray on the street. Police say the officers, who were not wearing uniforms, shot the teen after he pulled a gun.

Gray’s killing prompted a week of protest marches in Brooklyn, including some incidents that turned violent, with people ransacking a market and throwing items at police officers and police vehicles.

Flatbush Riot: Vigil For Kimani Gray, 16-Year-Old Shot And Killed By NYPD Cops, Turns Violent

A candlelight vigil to mourn a 16-year-old boy who was fatally shot by police turned violent Monday evening, as frustrated attendees threw bottles at cops, broke shop windows and looted a Rite Aid, officials and sources said.

the backstory:

June 14, 2012 -

According to witnesses, officers got out of their car with guns drawn and told the woman to exit the vehicle. Those witnesses told 1010 WINS’ Eileen Lehpamer the woman was unable to do so because she was trapped by an airbag.
At that point, witnesses said, officers fired into the car and shot the woman as she was sitting in the driver’s seat. The police officers then pulled the woman out of the car as she lay dying in the street, according to witness accounts. from WINS, Police: Woman Struggled With Cops Before Being Shot Dead In Brooklyn

Police shot and killed a 16-year-old boy late Saturday night…Kimani Gray, 16, of Crown Heights…

Police said both officers fired at the suspect, hitting Kimani in several places on his torso and legs, cops said. The boy was rushed to Kings County Hospital but declared dead on arrival, police said. Both officers were treated at Methodist Hospital and treated for trauma and tinnitus.

Kimani’s uncle, Cecil Nunes, 65, said the boy and his mother, Carol, an out-of-work chef, had lived with him in Crown Heights for a year until a week ago, when the two moved back to the neighborhood Kimani was raised in, East Flatbush.

“I don’t what he was up to last night. I don’t know what happened,” said Nunes, his voice trembling. “He was respectful, but a typical teenager. I have to ask myself why this happened. Why, why, why,” he said.

The boy’s mother had to be hospitalized after she learned of her son’s death, said Nunes, and she had just been released Sunday morning. from DNAinfo.com, Police Fatally Shoot Armed 16-Year-Old in Brooklyn, Cops Say

This past Monday night, when a vigil for slain Brooklyn teenager Kimani Gray turned violent, we wondered what might happen next. Last night things got out of hand again, though this time mainstream media is referring to it as “unrest” rather than a “riot.”

The Post reports that 50 people were arrested, including the victim’s sister, and a police offer was hit in the face with a brick (but not seriously injured, which makes usage of the word “smashed” in the Post’s headline a little curious).

To recap, Gray was shot by police officers on the night of March 9 after they claimed he pointed a gun at them, which some witnesses have refuted. Autopsy results released yesterday show he was hit with seven bullets on both his front and back.

With tensions continuing to escalate between police and Flatbush community members, one has to wander what’s next?

from NewYorkNatives

The NYPD Declares Martial Law in Brooklyn

On the heels of three nights of protests over the police slaying of 16 year old Kimani Gray, the NYPD has turned the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn into a State of Exception, claiming emergency powers to suspend the constitutional guarantees of the citizenry.

The people regularly targeted by police harassment and violence, overwhelmingly the city’s poor and minority populations, have taken to the streets to speak out against the NYPD’s draconian tactics. The police have in turn responded with even further harsh measures by suppressing the right of the people to voice dissatisfaction with that very same police force.

Cops kettled protesters at Wednesday night’s candlelight vigil, resulting in 46 arrests. Police even arrested Kimani Gray’s distraught sister, Mahnefeh.

The NYPD euphemistically calls the public spaces in which the Constitutional rights of the people are suspended “frozen zones.”

Holder: Obama Can Kill Citizens on US Soil Without Due Process

Joe Wright
Activist Post

Battlefield USA just ratcheted up one notch with comments made by Attorney General Eric Holder to Senator Rand Paul. As the indefinite detention provision for American citizens within the NDAA as stated in sections 1021 and 1022 is still being hard fought in many states, drone use within U.S. borders is still being contested and the FAA has yet to release a concrete guide as to how many licenses have been granted for US flights, AG Holder would not rule out a drone strike against an American citizen on U.S. soil if he were to “imagine an extraordinary circumstance.” Worse yet, the nation’s leading legal adviser said unequivocally that it would be constitutional.

“It is possible, I suppose, to imagine an extraordinary circumstance in which it would be necessary and appropriate under the Constitution and applicable laws of the United States for the President to authorize the military to use lethal force within the territory of the United States.”

Paul disagreed:

“The U.S. Attorney General’s refusal to rule out the possibility of drone strikes on American citizens and on American soil is more than frightening – it is an affront to the Constitutional due process rights of all Americans,” he said in a statement. (Source)

Holder’s statements also come at a time when civil libertarians and government officials alike are not clear about the scope of the drone program and the government’s legal justification for such actions abroad or at home. The architect of the so-called “targeted killing playbook,” John Brennan, has called drone strikes, “ethical, and just” while claiming that there hadn’t been a single collateral death in Pakistan from drone strikes. This is just one example of who is in control of ensuring that our civil liberties and human rights are protected. Eric Holder is another.

from activist post

The US policy of using aerial drone strikes to carry out targeted killings presents a major challenge to the system of international law that has endured since the second world war, a United Nations investigator has said.

Christof Heyns, the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial killings, summary or arbitrary executions, told a conference in Geneva that President Obama’s attacks in Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere, carried out by the CIA, would encourage other states to flout long-established human rights standards.

US policy of using drone strikes to carry out targeted killings ‘may encourage other states to flout international law’

The USA is not a signatory to the International Criminal Court (ICC) or many other international legal forums where legal action might be started. It is, however, part of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) where cases can be initiated by one state against another.

Ian Seiderman, director of the International Commission of Jurists, told the conference that “immense damage was being done to the fabric of international law”.
One of the latest UAV developments that concerns human rights groups is the way in which attacks, they allege, have moved towards targeting groups based on perceived patterns of behaviour that look suspicious from aerial surveillance, rather than relying on intelligence about specific al-Qaida activists.

U.S. drones targeting rescuers and mourners

NYU student Josh Begley is tweeting every reported U.S. drone strike since 2002, and the feed highlights a disturbing tactic employed by the U.S. that is widely considered a war crime.

Known as the “double tap,” the tactic involves bombing a target multiple times in relatively quick succession, meaning that the second strike often hits first responders.

A 2007 report by the Homeland Security Institute called double taps a “favorite tactic of Hamas” and the FBI considers it a tactic employed by terrorists.

UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial killings Christof Heyns said that if there are “secondary drone strikes on rescuers who are helping (the injured) after an initial drone attack, those further attacks are a war crime.”

The U.S. refuses to discuss the merits of its overtly covert drone program, but the reports featured on @dronestream clearly document that U.S. hellfire missiles have intentionally targeted funerals and civilian rescuers.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE TARGETED FOR A DRONE STRIKE!

A new amply documented report demonstrates the use of American tactics that are almost certainly war crimes

By

On December 30 of last year, ABC News reported on a 16-year-old Pakistani boy, Tariq Khan, who was killed with his 12-year-old cousin when a car in which he was riding was hit with a missile fired by a U.S. drone. As I noted at the time, the report contained this extraordinary passage buried in the middle:

Asked for documentation of Tariq and Waheed’s deaths, Akbar did not provide pictures of the missile strike scene. Virtually none exist, since drones often target people who show up at the scene of an attack.

What made that sentence so amazing was that it basically amounts to a report that the U.S. first kills people with drones, then fires on the rescuers and others who arrive at the scene where the new corpses and injured victims lie.

In a just-released, richly documented report, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, on behalf of the Sunday Times, documents that this is exactly what the U.S. is doing — and worse:

The CIA’s drone campaign in Pakistan has killed dozens of  civilians who had gone to help rescue victims or were attending funerals, an investigation by the Bureau for the Sunday Times has revealed.

The findings are published just days after President Obama claimed that the drone campaign in Pakistan was a “targeted, focused effort” that “has not caused a huge number of civilian casualties”. . . .

A three month investigation including eye witness reports has found evidence that at least 50 civilians were killed in follow-up strikes when they had gone to help victims. More than 20 civilians have also been attacked in deliberate strikes on funerals and mourners. The tactics have been condemned by leading legal experts.

I know in my bones that a robot is going to kill you – the new micro-drones

It’s no use hoping a chilling video of drones being developed by the US is a hoax, as made-up tech tends to come true anyway

Call me a pessimist, but every now and then I see something and think: “Yes, well, there’s something that’s inexorably destined to kill me and my family and everyone I’ve ever met or glimpsed or thought about, in wretched, shrieking, unimaginable and horrendously protracted agony.”

US Air Force Research Laboratory video animation of a flapping-wing micro air vehicle (MAV). AFRL’s goal is to develop a bird-sized MAV by 2015 and an insect-sized MAV by 2030. The bird-sized MAV would be air-deployed from a larger UAV so search for weapons of mass destruction, operating semi-autonomously for up to a week.

An Air Force simulation says researchers are at work on killer robots so tiny that a group of them could blend into a cityscape.

Science writer John Horgan’s feature on the many ways drones will be used in coming years is interesting throughout, and terrifying in the passage where he describes an effort to build micro-drones that are, as the U.S. Air Force describes them, “Unobtrusive, pervasive, and lethal.”

“we’re continuing to fuel a drone arms race that guarantees widespread proliferation”

Air Force officials declined a request to observe flight tests at a “micro-aviary” they’ve built, he reported, but they did let him see a video dramatization “starring micro-UAVs that resemble winged, multi-legged bugs. The drones swarm through alleys, crawl across windowsills, and perch on power lines. One of them sneaks up on a scowling man holding a gun and shoots him in the head.”

God Of All Things

The November 22 cover of Newsweek Magazine depicts President Obama as a many-armed Hindu deity holding up items representing his administration’s many priorities or policy issues. The article, entitled “God of All Things, (G.O.A.T)” details the many and increasing responsibilities of the chief executive and was intended to show that the job of president is daunting and difficult for one man to handle alone. However, critics were puzzled on how that translates to “god of all things”.

The image of Obama on the cover of Nov. 22 issue of the Newsweek magazine was that of Shiva – the god who is the destroyer or transformer.

“Shiva meaning the auspicious one, also known as Rudra or the feared one is one of the Trimurthi (Hindu Trinity): Brahma being the Creator, Vishnu being the Preserver and Shiva the Destroyer or Transformer. In the Shaiva tradition he is seen as the Supreme God and is usually worshipped in the form of Shiva Linga. In images, he is generally represented as immersed in deep meditation or dancing the Thandava upon Maya, the demon of ignorance in his manifestation of Nataraja, the lord of the dance, the same dance is also known as the dance of death.”

This depiction of Obama has upset some Hindus, as reported by several media. However, it appears that the image carries a far more subliminal message rather than just being a silly imagination of an artist/author or to incite some religious sentiments within certain sections of a community.

bradley manning takes full responibility for leaked documents

“No one associated with the WLO [WikiLeaks Organization] pressured me to give them more information,” Manning said. “The decision to give documents to WikiLeaks [was] mine alone.”

FORT MEADE, Md. — Wearing his Army dress uniform, a composed, intense and articulate Pfc. Bradley Manning took “full responsibility” Thursday for providing the anti-secrecy organization WikiLeaks with a trove of classified and sensitive military, diplomatic and intelligence cables, videos and documents.

In the lengthiest statement to a military tribunal Manning has provided since his nearly three-year long ordeal began, Manning, 25, said WikiLeaks did not encourage him to provide the organization with any information. But he also sketched out his emotionally fraught online interactions with his WikiLeaks handler, a man he knew as “Ox” or “Nathaniel” over Internet Relay Chat and Jabber, and whom the government maintains was Julian Assange.

Manning’s motivations in leaking, he said, was to “spark a domestic debate of the role of the military and foreign policy in general,” he said, and “cause society to reevaluate the need and even desire to engage in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations that ignore their effect on people who live in that environment every day.” Manning said he was in sound mind when he leaked, and did so deliberately, regardless of the legal circumstances.

Remarkably, Manning said he first tried to take his information to the Washington Post, the New York Times and Politico, before contacting WikiLeaks.

The statement came as Manning pleaded guilty on Thursday to 10 of 22 charges the Army has levied against him. Manning admitted to improperly storing classified information; having unauthorized possession of such information; willfully communicating it to an unauthorized person; and other “lesser-included” offenses. Each of the 10 offenses to which Manning pleaded guilty carries a sentence of up to two years’ imprisonment, for a total of 20 years in prison.

But Manning pleaded not-guilty to 12 more charges, including the most serious: aiding the enemy, which carries a sentence of life imprisonment. He also denied disseminating any information that he believed could harm U.S. national security, a key aspect of prosecution’s espionage case.

That means the guilty pleas will not necessarily end Manning’s legal woes. The government has the option of pressing forward with the remaining charges, as well as to contest aspects of the lesser charges Manning pleaded guilty to committing. If they proceed, Manning’s trial is expected to formally start here in June.

Manning spoke for over an hour as he read from a 35-page document detailing and explaining his actions that drove him to disclose what he said he “believed, and still believe… are some of the most significant documents of our time.” He rarely grew emotional, with the exception of describing his alienation from his fellow soldiers in Iraq and his relationship with Julian Assange.

Manning described accessing, investigating and ultimately spiriting away and leaking military and diplomatic documents as consistent with his training as an intelligence analyst, attempting to put together a factual picture of complex events. He came to view much of what the Army told him — and the public — to be false, such as the suggestion the military had destroyed a graphic video of an aerial assault in Iraq that killed civilians, or that WikiLeaks was a nefarious entity.

The leaking came gradually, Manning explained — providing a window into the military’s poor data hygiene. While serving at Forward Operating Base Hammer in Iraq in 2009, Manning accessed, compressed and copied databases containing voluminous accounts of military activities in Iraq and Afghanistan, known as CIDNE-I and CIDNE-A.

“I never hid the fact that I downloaded copies of CIDNE-I and CIDNE-A” and burned them onto CDs, Manning said, even labeling and storing them “in the open” in his unit’s tactical operations center. Nor did he hide that he also downloaded compression software to facilitate the transfer, Manning said.

That practice apparently made it less conspicuous for Manning to take the burned discs into his military housing, insert them into his personal laptop and send them securely to WikiLeaks’ password-protected online dropbox, often using Tor and other anonymity protocols to mask his identity. Manning stated that he used the same process to spirit away information on detainees at Guantanamo Bay; unspecified documents from an “intelligence agency”; and the State Department’s “Net-Centric Diplomacy” database of diplomatic cables to which the military had access.

Often, Manning would download classified or sensitive information while he simultaneously compiled his intelligence analyses for his unit.

In each of these cases, Manning denied that he was compromising national security. The military activities in Iraq and Afghanistan were often “historic,” with its intelligence value perishable after “48 to 72 hours.” The Guantanamo Bay documents had “no useful intelligence” and did not disclose any results of detainee interrogations. The State Department cables were available to “thousands” of people throughout the government. A Washington Post reporter, David Finkel, had already written about a deadly Apache helicopter attack in 2007, in which civilians were killed, that Manning viewed on video.

Manning said he often found himself frustrated by attempts to get his chain of command to investigate apparent abuses detailed in the documents Manning accessed. “As an analyst, I always want to figure out the truth,” he said. He considered the military unresponsive to the helicopter attack video and other “war porn.” At Guantanamo, while Manning said he had sympathy for the government’s interest in detaining terrorists, “we found ourselves holding an increasing number of individuals indefinitely.”

But Manning conceded that he did not “even look at the proper channels” on how the military chain of command could release the sensitive information.

While in Iraq, Manning — alienated from his fellow soldiers – began visiting WikiLeaks IRC channels and conversing about topics ranging from Linux to gay rights. The chats “allowed me to feel connected to others, even when I was alone,” soothing the emotional stresses of deployment.

But when Manning took a brief mid-tour leave from Iraq in January 2010, he was grappling with disclosing his information trove — but not necessarily to WikiLeaks. While staying with his aunt in Potomac, Md., Manning said he tried to talk to an unnamed Washington Post reporter to interest her in the Iraq and Afghanistan documents, but “I did not believe she took me seriously.” He left voicemails with the public editor and the news-tips lines for the New York Times and heard nothing. A blizzard, he said, kept him from driving to Politico’s office to discuss the documents. According to Manning’s account, only after his attempts to give the documents to mainstream media organizations fail did he consider giving them to WikiLeaks.

scumbag greek government hires Blackwater mercenaries to kill it’s own citizens

Blackwater is notorious. A private mercenary army, it first came to public attention in 2003 two years after it was founded after the US government contracted it to provide military support for the war in Iraq. Innumerable scandals followed. And now the Greek Government has enlisted its services for domestic duties.

The first time Blackwater came to public attention was with the killing of four of its contractors in Fallujah. The outpouring of rage at the atrocities the company was wreaking on the town which led to the killing made it apparent that substantial elements of the Iraq War had been subcontracted to a private company.  The contract that Blackwater held in Iraq was worth over $1bn, and the intervention became dogged by scandal with dozens of murders by Blackwater employees hushed up, including the murder of 17 civilians in Nisour Square in Bagdad.   It later emerged that senior managers of the company authorised secret payments of about $1m into Iraq intending to bribe officials to allow Blackwater to remain in Iraq despite Baghdad’s position that the company would be banned and the killers prosecuted when those and other murders came to light.

When its contract for Iraq was not renewed in 2009, it moved to Afghanistan, on a contract worth $200 million, yet still the scandals continued. In May 2009, four drunken off-duty operatives killed a civilian when they opened fire on a car; and in January 2010, two operatives were arrested by the FBI on murder charges for a further two civilian deaths. Yet this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Blackwater in Greece: Fears of Coup as Mercenaries Hired for Guarding Govt, Overseeing Police

Blackwater mercenaries are currently overseeing the police in Greece as rumours of a coup abound. We understand the situation is extremely tense and that the mercenaries are there mainly to protect the Government and parliament should trouble break out either in the form of a revolution or counter-revolution. Already, a destabilisation plot involving the far-right and police has been uncovered. More below… Over the last 12 months or more Greece has seen wave after wave of mass demonstrations, riots, battles between police and protesters, armed attacks on Government premises, attacks by fascists (i.e. Golden Dawn ) on migrants, as well as, of course, the complete collapse of the economy. The Government has been beset by scandals (e.g. secret bank accounts in Switzerland) and journalists have been arrested. Most people now exist day by day via co-operatives; workers are taking over the factories .

Mercenaries protecting Government under siege

The Greek Government signed a contract with Academi (the new name for Blackwater) in November last year, though this was a secret agreement and you will not find details about it on the Academi website ). News of the contract leaked out end of January when the Greek ambassador to Canada, Leonidas Chrysanthopoulos, let slip about it in an interview, which was then published in a blog (see highlighted sentence in red). The contract with Academi was confirmed a few days later via the Greek military news site Defencenet. Blackwater/Academi are infamous as the company that ran mercenary operations during the last Iraq War and were engaged in unnecessary fire fights in urban areas, taking civilian lives. They currently have a forward ops base in Afghanistan. We understand their principal role in Greece is two-fold. One is to oversee police operations. They have been contracted to do this because the Government are aware that the police have been comprehensively infiltrated by members of the fascist Golden Dawn and so cannot trust the police to stay loyal. Their other role is to act as a neutral force to provide full protection to the Government against assault from any quarter. In effect, the Greek Government is under siege.

blackwaTERCoup possibility

Recently the Government secured an agreement from the army that under no circumstances would they resort to a coup (as happened in 1967, leading to the junta of 1967-1974 ). Whether this agreement will be honoured remains to be seen. As Greece is now part of the European Community a coup will be unlikely, but in the event of heightened tension martial law could be declared with curfews etc.

Warning of revolution/counter-revolution

According to Ambassador Chrysanthopoulos in his interview, “At a certain moment, quite soon, there will be an explosion of social unrest. It will be very unpleasant.” He then referred to fifteen armed incidents in the previous ten days, including the firebombing of the offices of the governing parties and the homes of pro-government journalists, the machine-gunning of the headquarters of the prime minister’s conservative New Democracy party, and a bomb explosion at a shopping mall belonging to the country’s second wealthiest citizen. Chrysanthopoulos predicts the trouble will begin when new tax bills arrive (soon)…

The arson attack on the Skouries mining site and its aftermath

An arson attack took place on the worksite of mining company Hellas Gold in the Skouries forest in north-eastern Halkidiki in the night from 16 to 17 February 2013. An initial report, posted by the pro-mining blog “Citizen of the Aristotelis Municipality”, stated that 50 to 70 individuals wearing full-face hoods and armed with shotguns and petrol bombs entered the site shortly after midnight and set equipments and vehicles on fire. The report further claimed that the assailants immobilized the two security guards who were on the site and held them hostage after dousing them with petrol and threatening to set them on fire. The value of the shares of the majority owner of Hellas Gold, Canadian company Eldorado Gold, dropped by 6% in the Toronto stock exchange following news of the attack. The Skouries forest is at the centre of a hot dispute between the mining company, Hellas Gold, which is owned at 95% by Canadian mining giant Eldorado Gold and at 5% by Greek public works company Hellaktor, and local communities.

greekforest
The company claims that a pharaonic plan for mining of gold and copper in the area will benefit the region through the creation of some 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, while local residents argue that not only the dubious terms under which mining rights were transferred to Hellas Gold mean that the Greek State will receive no financial benefits from the mining project, but also that activities planned by Hellas Gold will cause massive damage to the environment which will in turn lead to the loss of many more jobs in the existing sectors of the local economy (farming, animal husbandry, fisheries, beekeeping, food processing and tourism). The residents’ claims are supported by research conducted by various independent scientific institutions such as the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Technical Chamber of Macedonia. The fact that the company has the support of the government in the name of “securing foreign investments” has often resulted in extremely heavy-handed police tactics against protesting residents, for example during a demonstration on 21 October 2012. THE TERRORISM OF ‘LAW AND ORDER’

Basic and fundamental human rights are being abused in Greece in the name of ‘law and order’. Adopting a policy of zero tolerance to anything it deems as ‘lawlessness’, the Greek government believes that a society that has been brutalised and beaten by the economic crisis will accept its policies of repression. The ideology of the Neo-Nazi party, that has seen such a spectacular rise since the last elections, is being put into practice by a coalition government that has no ideology of its own.

These policies of repression and terrorism are being implemented by the Minister of Law and Order, Nikos Dendias whose first ‘achievement’ was the introduction of the so-called ‘koukoulonomos’ in 2009, a law that decrees that anyone who wears a hoodie can be arrested. This was the beginning of a series of attacks on civil liberties. Under this law hundreds of people have been arrested and prosecuted because some police officer or other has attested that these people were wearing a ‘hoodie’ or something resembling a ‘hoodie’ during the time of their arrest.

UK: government-mandated vaccines are counter-productive and deadly

Freedom of Information Act in the UK filed by a doctor there has revealed 30 years of secret official documents showing that government experts have

1. Known the vaccines don’t work
2. Known they cause the diseases they are supposed to prevent
3. Known they are a hazard to children
4. Colluded to lie to the public
5. Worked to prevent safety studies

Those are the same vaccines that are mandated to children in the US.

Educated parents can either get their children out of harm’s way or continue living inside one of the largest most evil lies in history, that vaccines – full of heavy metals, viral diseases, mycoplasma, fecal material, DNA fragments from other species, formaldehyde, polysorbate 80 (a sterilizing agent) – are a miracle of modern medicine.

Freedom of Information Act filed in the US with the CDC by a doctor with an autistic son, seeking information on what the CDC knows about the dangers of vaccines, had by law to be responded to in 20 days. Nearly 7 years later, the doctor went to court and the CDC argued it does not have to turn over documents. A judge ordered the CDC to turn over the documents on September 30th, 2011.

On October 26, 2011, a Denver Post editorial expressed shock that the Obama administration, after promising to be especially transparent, was proposing changes to the Freedom of Information Act that would allow it to go beyond declaring some documents secret and to actually allow government agencies (such as the CDC) to declare some document “non-existent.”

new-measles-vaccineSimultaneous to this on-going massive CDC cover up involving its primary “health” not recommendation but MANDATE for American children, the CDC is in deep trouble over its decades of covering up the damaging effects of fluoride and affecting the lives of all Americans, especially children and the immune compromised. Lawsuits are being prepared.  Children are ingesting 3-4 times more fluoride by body weight as adults and “[t]he sheer number of potentially harmed citizens — persons with dental fluorosis, kidney patients tipped into needing dialysis, diabetics, thyroid patients, etc — numbers in the millions.”

The CDC is obviously acting against the health of the American people. But the threat to the lives of the American people posed by the CDC’s behavior does not stop there. It participated in designed pandemic laws that are on the books in every state in the US, which arrange for the government to use military to force unknown, untested vaccines, drugs, chemicals, and “medical” treatments on the entire country if it declares a pandemic emergency.

The CDC’s credibility in declaring such a pandemic emergency is non-existent, again based on Freedom of Information Act. For in 2009, after the CDC had declared the H1N1 “pandemic,” the CDC refused to respond to Freedom of Information Act filed by CBS News and the CDC also attempted to block their investigation.  What the CDC was hiding was its part in one of the largest medical scandals in history, putting out wildly exaggerated data on what it claimed were H1N1 cases, and by doing so, created the false impression of a “pandemic” in the US.

The CDC was also covering up e financial scandal to rival the bailout since the vaccines for the false pandemic cost the US billions. And worse, the CDC put pregnant women first in line for an untested vaccine with a sterilizing agent, polysorbate 80, in it. Thanks to the CDC,  “the number of vaccine-related “fetal demise” reports increased by 2,440 percent in 2009 compared to previous years, which is even more shocking than the miscarriage statistic [700% increase].

The exposure of the vaccine hoax is running neck and neck with the much older hoax of a deadly 1918-19 flu. It was aspirin  that killed people in 1918-19, not a pandemic flu. It was the greatest industrial catastrophe in human history with 20-50 million people dying but it was blamed on a flu. The beginning of the drug industry began with that success (and Monsanto was part of it). The flu myth was used by George Bush to threaten the world with “another pandemic flu that could kill millions” – a terror tactic to get pandemic laws on the books in every state and worldwide. Then the CDC used hoax of the pandemic hoax to create terror over H1N1 and to push deadly vaccines on the public, killing thousands of unborn children and others.  (CDC will not release the data and continues to push the same vaccine.)

UK Government Experts Cover Up Vaccine Hazards

If you want to get an idea of who is responsible for your child’s condition resulting from a vaccine adverse reaction then this is the paper to read. What you have to ask yourself is if the people on these committees are honest and honourable and acting in the best interests of British children, how is it this has been going on for at least 30 years?

This is what everyone has always known but could never prove before now. Pass this information on to others so they can see what goes on in Government health committees behind locked doors.

We quote here from the author’s summary and the paper:

Deliberately concealing information from parents for the sole purpose of getting them to comply with an “official” vaccination schedule could be considered as a form of ethical violation or misconduct. Official documents obtained from the UK Department of Health (DH) and the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) reveal that the British health authorities have been engaging in such practice for the last 30 years, apparently for the sole purpose of protecting the national vaccination program.

The 45 page paper with detailed evidence can be downloaded here: The vaccination policy and the Code of Practice of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI): are they at odds? Lucija Tomljenovic, Neural Dynamics Research Group, Dept. of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.  It was presented at and forms part of the proceedings of The 2011 BSEM Scientific Conference now published online here: The Health Hazards of Disease Prevention BSEM Scientific Conference, March 2011.

Tor operator charged for child porn transmitted over his servers

Austrian man is latest to be held responsible for traffic passing through Tor.

An Austrian operator of Tor servers—that were used to anonymously route huge amounts of traffic over the Internet—has been charged with distributing child pornography. This comes after police detected illegal images traversing one of the nodes he maintains.

William Weber, a 20-year-old IT administrator in Graz, Austria, said nine officers searched his home on Wednesday after presenting him with a court order charging him with distribution and possible production of child pornography. The crimes carry penalties of as many as 10 years in prison. Police from the Styrian Landeskriminalamt, which has jurisdiction over the Austrian state of Styria, confiscated 20 computers as well as a game console, iPads, external hard drives, USB thumb drives, and other electronics. Evidence cited in the document showed that one of seven Tor Project exit nodes he operated transported illegal images.

“My storage cubes (HP MicroServers) were confiscated without any regard for the hardware—the power cords were simply ripped out instead of properly shutting them down,” he wrote in a blog post published Thursday morning. “After finishing the search in my living room, they continued in my bedroom, where they confiscated my legal firearms, as well as my cable TV receiver and my Xbox 360. Despite my statement that all firearms and ammunition were legally owned and registered, having passed all background checks, this was doubted by one of the LKA officers due to the caliber.”

There is no way that an ISP or other such data transport can identify the bits being transmitted across their network. They can't even wonder if they are legitimate. You are comparing apples to belugas.

There is no way that an ISP or other such data transport can identify the bits being transmitted across their network. They can’t even wonder if they are legitimate.
You are comparing apples to belugas.

Short for the onion router, Tor was designed by the US Naval Research Laboratory as a way to cloak the IP addresses and contents of people sending e-mail, browsing websites, and doing other online activities. It is regularly used by political dissidents, journalists, law enforcement officers, and criminals who want to keep their online activities private. Tor works by encrypting a user’s Internet traffic multiple times and funneling it through a dedicated server with its own IP address. The data is then passed to a second server, which decrypts one layer of the encryption before passing it to a third server. At that point the data is converted to its original form and sent to its final destination. Tor’s onion-like architecture makes it infeasible for the contents to be intercepted by third parties, except by those monitoring an exit node. Even then, it’s hard to know where the traffic originated.

Weber isn’t the first operator of a Tor node to land in hot water as a result of the traffic traversing his server. In 2007, German police raided the home of a Dusseldorf man after bomb threats allegedly passed through his Tor server. Last year, a separate Tor operator said police confiscated hardware and software after someone misused his exit node.

During interview with police later on Wednesday, Weber said there was a “more friendly environment” once investigators understood the Polish server that transmitted the illegal images was used by Tor participants rather than by Weber himself. But he said he still faces the possibility of serious criminal penalties and the possibility of a precedent that Tor operators can be held liable if he’s convicted.

“Sadly we have nothing like the EFF here that could help me in this case by legal assistance, so I’m on my own and require a good lawyer,” he wrote in a blog post seeking donations.

Weber told Ars he typically ran about five to 10 nodes at any one time, from locations in the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Austria, and Hong Kong. He estimated that in all they carried about 30 terabytes of data each day.

“The safest way is a middle node, as it cannot be seen from the Internet at all (it only routes internal traffic),” he told Ars. “Entry is pretty safe as well. Exit is very dangerous (as I’ve seen now…)”

from ARS technica blog Law & Disorder / Civilization & Discontents

in my experience, TOR is dangerous cyberterrian and not for tourists. you better have encryption down really well, and be willing to put up with slow loading speed. if you nose around enough to get noticed, you will attract hackers, and the better you protect yourself, the more of a challenge you are for them to play with. let’s be careful out there! – g

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi assumes broad, new powers – Egypt erupts into chaos

Amid chaos, healthy signs for democracy

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi had a problem with the country’s judges, who came to office under former dictator Hosni Mubarak and who he feared were going to shut down the assembly that is drafting a new constitution.

But when he asserted vast new powers to prevent that, he found that his solution created another, equally formidable problem: an eruption of opposition among Egyptians who said he was becoming “a new pharaoh.” By Monday evening, it appeared that Morsi was starting to hear them.

click on image to see a slideshow, from the Telegraph

The wave of protests that greeted his decree raised the worrisome possibility that Egyptian politics would grow more polarized and unpredictable, scaring off investors and impeding the economic revival the country so desperately needs. But it is largely for the better, not the worse. The people of Egypt have asserted that they didn’t topple a dictator only to tamely cede unbounded authority to a new ruler.

Last week, Morsi dismissed a public prosecutor he saw as an enemy and issued an edict making his decisions immune from judicial review. Instead of reassuring the public that he was safeguarding the transition to democracy, he sparked fears that he was doing exactly the opposite.

Egyptians poured into the streets to protest the edict, and mobs attacked his party’s offices in various cities. Opposition groups formed a National Salvation Front to resist his power grab, and the Egyptian Press Syndicate, which includes journalists at state-owned organs as well as independent media, demanded that Morsi reverse course. The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies said, “The balance and separation of powers in Egypt has thereby been utterly destroyed.”
from the chacago tribune, Morsi overreaches, Egypt roars

“We are back to square one, politically, socially,”

Forged out of the once-banned Muslim Brotherhood, the Morsi administration has defended his decree as an effort to speed up reforms that will complete Egypt’s democratic transformation.

Yet leftists, liberals, socialists and others say it has exposed the autocratic impulses of a man once jailed by Mubarak, while Islamist parties have rallied behind Morsi.

“There is no room for dialogue when a dictator imposes the most oppressive, abhorrent measures and then says ‘let us split the difference’,” prominent opposition leader ElBaradei said.

“I am waiting to see, I hope soon, a very strong statement of condemnation by the US, by Europe and by everybody who really cares about human dignity,” he said in an interview with Reuters and the Associated Press.

Activists opposed to the Morsi decree were camped out in central Cairo for a third consecutive day. State media reported that Morsi met for a second day with his advisers.

“I am really afraid that the two camps are paving the way for violence,” said Hassan Nafaa, a professor of political science at Cairo University. “Morsi has misjudged this, very much so. But forcing him again to relinquish what he has done will appear a defeat.”

Morsi’s decree drew warnings from Western countries to uphold democracy, a day after he had received glowing tributes from the United States and others for his work brokering a deal to end eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas.

Egypt’s president backs off plan to seize broad power

President Mohamed Morsi agreed Monday to scale back a sweeping decree he had issued last week that raised his edicts above any judicial review, according to a report by a television network allied with his party.

The agreement, reached with top judicial authorities, would leave most of Morsi’s actions subject to review by the courts but preserve a crucial power: protecting the constitutional council from being dissolved by the courts before it finishes its work.

The Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group that sponsored Morsi and his party, announced that it was canceling a major demonstration in support of the president that had been planned for Tuesday.

Cracks appeared in Morsi’s government Sunday over the decree after the justice minister, Ahmed Mekki, began arguing for a retreat, and at least three other senior advisers resigned over the measure

The move had also prompted widening street protests and cries from opponents that Morsi, who already governs without a legislature, was moving toward a new autocracy in Egypt, less than two years after the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.

With a threatened strike by the nation’s judges, a plunge in the country’s stock market, and more street protests looming, Morsi’s administration initially sent mixed messages Sunday over whether it was willing to consider a compromise.

A spokesman for the president’s party insisted that there would be no change in his edict, but a statement from the party indicated for the first time a willingness to give political opponents ‘‘guarantees against monopolizing the fateful decisions of the homeland in the absence of the Parliament.’’

Mekki, the influential leader of a judicial independent movement under Mubarak and one of Morsi’s closest aides, actively tried to broker a deal with top jurists to resolve the crisis.

The Muslim Brotherhood and Morsi’s opponents had each called for major demonstrations in Cairo on Tuesday. Late Monday, the Brotherhood called off its planned rally.
