A 52-year-old professor in Stockholm, who allegedly sliced off his wife’s lower lip and ate it, has been charged with aggravated assault.
The man, who has not been named and is said to be a respected researcher at the Karolinska Institute north of Stockholm, also sliced his wife’s arms in the attack, according to TheLocal.se, a Swedish news website.
Prosecutors said he was upset with his wife when she asked for a divorce and flew into a jealous rage.
”He did it so that she would never be able to kiss again and said ‘I’ll get four years, but you’re getting a life sentence,”’ prosecutor Jakob Holmberg said according to the news website.
The professor reportedly has several children from a previous marriage, and just a few weeks after divorcing his first wife married his current wife, a much younger woman.
According to Swedish site Aftonbladet, the professor had begun to suspect that his new wife was having an affair and had allegedly decided to punish her by disfiguring her.
”He didn’t want the lips to be able to be sewn back on,” said an unnamed source, explaining why he had eaten them, reported Agence France-Presse.
Plastic surgeons have attempted to rebuild the woman’s lower lip, but the injury is permanent.

If convicted, the professor faces a minimum sentence of four years in prison and a maximum of 10 years.
