Fears of a huge new volcanic eruptions in Iceland, Columbia

A major eruption could result in large parts of Iceland being flooded as snow and ice melted; significant poisoning of Icelandic agriculture; destruction of property; and, of course, the grounding of aircraft across Europe.

If enough material is ejected it could even have a cooling effect on the global climate for a few years. A precedent for that would be the 1783-84 eruption from the fissure of Laki, which is part of the same volcanic system, Grimsvotn, that erupted last year. This was a very large eruption of 15 cubic kilometres (3.6 cubic miles), compared to the fraction of a cubic kilometre ejected in 2010, and had a huge impact on the northern hemisphere, reducing temperatures by up to 3 degrees C. This had catastrophic effects far beyond the shores of Iceland (where at least a fifth of the population died), with thousands of recorded deaths in Britain due to poisoning and extreme cold, and record low rainfall in North Africa.

Large eruptions such as this occur only every few hundred years on Iceland, but the potential for danger is significant. Even if deaths from famine are less likely today, a recent study of the potential effects of the air pollution caused by such an eruption estimates that it could lead to between 52,000 and 228,000 fatalities throughout Europe.

Meanwhile, nearby Hekla has erupted about once every 10 years in recent times, with the last being in 2000. Similarly, volcanoes beneath the largest ice cap, Vatnajokull, are entering a period of increased volcanic activity – the peak of a 140-year cycle.

This trend is being exacerbated by climate change. Vatnajokull has lost an estimated 400-billion tonnes of ice since the end of the 19th century. This has reduced the pressure on the hot mantle material beneath the crust, leading to increased magma generation. At the end of the last ice age, this same effect led to eruption rates some 30 times higher than at present. The current rate of ice loss is much lower than then, but we can still expect the formation of extra magma equivalent to that which erupted from Eyjafjallajokull in 2010 every 10 years or so.

Nevado del Ruiz volcano (Colombia): Red Alert declared

Tuesday Apr 10, 2012 19:03 PM | Age: 1 days
BY: T

The Colombian authorities have declared a red alert for the area around the volcano Nevado del Ruiz and warn the population against the feared mud flows (lahars) that are to be expected in an eruption of the volcano. The status of the volcano itself is described as eruption likely in the coming days or weeks.
The reason is a steady increase in seismic activity and gas emissions from the summit crater. In recent days, more and more, usually small earthquakes have been occurring at shallow depths under the volcano, some of them felt. A steam nd gas plume is rising from the crater to 1.5 km and sulfur smell can be noticed in nearby villages and towns.
430 000 inhabitants from the valleys of the Río Chinchina, Manizales and four other rivers have been warned of mud flows and possible floods, which could be triggered especially during heavy rains, even when there is no eruption.

dying for oil: trucks killed seven native children and youths

The trucks of the oil and gas industry are responsible for the deaths of seven children and youths, while the oil and gas drilling is destroying the land, water and air at Fort Berthold, land of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara, in North Dakota. Still, Three Affiliated elected tribal politicians continue to push for more death and destruction.

Those oil and gas semi-trucks have resulted in the deaths of seven children and youths in the past the three years, including two children who were three and five years old.

Speaking at the Rights of Mother Earth Gathering, Kandi Mossett, Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara, said the energy companies are spending money on propaganda in North Dakota, and her people are dying.

“They have billions of dollars to run campaigns with their propaganda.” Mossett said even though North Dakota is among the windiest states, the oil and gas industry continues to be the focus.“It is all about oil. People are dying where I come from, literally being killed by semi-trucks.”

Mossett said seven youths have been killed in the past three years, and two of them were only three and five years old. (Listen to the video below.)

She pointed out that the US and tribal officials are now talking about expediting the process.

Mossett was referring to the push by tribal officials to Congressional committees to expedite the oil and gas industry that is destroying the land, poisoning the water and air and killing the people.

US Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced new initiatives in April to expedite the oil and gas industry, following a meeting with Chairman Tex Hall who has been pushing for more oil and gas drilling. Hall has also pushed to remove regulations for fracking.

The truth about the oil and gas expansion on tribal land in North Dakota, and the effect of tribal leaders pushing for more drilling, are among the most censored issues.

Listen to Kandi Mossett on this video from the open mic session at the gathering:

gruesome murder of transgender activist sparks outrage in mexico

Agnes Torres, a transsexual psychologist and gay rights activist, left her home in the central Mexican state of Puebla on her way to a party. The next day, her body was found in a gully, naked from the waist down. Her throat had been slit.

“Agnes’s case had major repercussions because she was an activist involved deeply in the struggle for our rights. But there are many other cases that no one has ever heard about,”

Torres was 28 years old and in the process of changing her identity in Mexico City, the only part of Mexico that has passed progressive laws such as the decriminalisation of abortion, same-sex marriage and a gender identity law http://ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=51861 allowing transgender people to change their gender and sex, under the left-leaning Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), which governs the capital.

Big demo against homophobia and femicide

…….The protesters, who according to news reports numbered between two hundred and one thousand, filled the central square with pictures of Torres, art, candles, and signs that read “La homosexualidad no es una enfermedad, la homofobia sí,” (Homosexuality is not a disease, homophobia is.)   Members of the crowd also taped signs to the walls of the buildings that border the central square: “Exigimos justicia,” (We demand justice) “¿Cuántas más?” (How many more?) “No somos todas; faltan nuestras muertas,” (This isn’t all of us; our dead are missing.)

The crowd chanted “va caer, va caer, la homofobía va caer.” (It will fall, it will fall, homophobia will fall.)  Instead of a minute of silence, the demonstrators had a minute of applause to remember and celebrate Torres’ life.  After filling the square for two hours, the group marched to the state government offices in downtown Puebla.
Word of Torres’ death spread quickly through social media, allowing the protest to be organized within about 24 hours.  On Monday night Twitter users were writing about plans for protests and memorials in other Mexican cities such as Xalapa and Guadalajara.
